In Gravity of Light, the Starns’ lamp, like the sun, provides a gravitational center to their universe. They choose the language of photography, writing in light. Their cameras are tools to mediate between sense and sensed, to introduce light into darkness. Light, therefore, is the medium and the message.The lamp casts light on seven of their elemental photographs, all of which have harnessed the power of light in ways both literal and poetic. These monumentally scaled photographs become chapels in an industrial cathedral. Their subjects are both emblems of and witnesses to the dualistic character of light, with its power to give life and to destroy it, to illuminate and to blind. The ill-fated moths of the Attracted to Light series are caught moments before self-immolation, drawn to the light that kills them, their images pinned, momentarily, on photographic paper. Across the gallery, abstracted growths that could be trees—or a neural cell’s dendrites—take root in the Structure of Thought series. The gnarled branches are, in effect, the sun’s signature. The leaf, the fruit of the branch, falls away in Black Pulse and Black Pulse Lambda. These desiccated leaves, recorded in filigreed detail, signal both decay and renewal; ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Lastly, there is the towering image of a Bodhisattva, the eighth-century Buddhist monk Ganjin, who, though blind, found illumination within.

Japan’s Spectacular Tunnels of Light.

If you happen to be in Japan from now until March 31st, 2013, be sure to check out one of Japan’s most stunning displays of light called Winter Illuminations at Nabana no Sato, a botanical garden turned light theme park on the island of Nagashima in Kuwana. Opened just yesterday, it’s already been called one of the best winter light shows in all of Japan. The park really outdoes itself by using millions of sparkling LED’s all over the vast grounds including on the water and in the gardens. This years theme is ‘nature’ and it promises gorgeous scenes including a beautiful sunrise inspired by Mt. Fuji at dawn, a rainbow across the sky, and even an aurora. The stars of the show are the famous walk-through tunnels of light that completely envelop the viewer, making it seem as if they’re walking through bright, magical portals.

They focused on the iconography of the sunflower seed. Prompted by the artist’s own statement, they frequently cited two references: the sunflower as a sign of the personal cult built around Mao, and the sunflower seed as a symbol of friend- ship among common people. Both interpretations refer to the Mao era, in particular the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976.

The mystery spot, also known as a “gravity hill,” is a uniquely American scam. They are (supposed) sites of gravitational anomaly, where visitors will feel queasy, scared, and disturbed. In reality, they’re tourist attractions—off-kilter structures that play tricks on your brain and inner ear. You’ll find quite a few of them in California, where artist Julian Hoeber lives and works.

First look: Gabriel Dawe’s stunning new thread art in Italy.

Gabriel Dawe created Plexis no. 19, a stunning thread installation thats beautifully spread across two balconies in the atrium of a historic villa. The early 19th century neoclassic house, called Villa Olmo, was acquired in 1924 by the municipality of Como and is now open to the public only during cultural events and art exhibitions like this.

Plexus no. 19 consists of two thread structures streamed across an upper and lower balcony that is meant to be experienced from different angles or at different times of the day. As Dawe tells us, “When the sun comes in during the morning, it is fantastic. Having those window-shaped light beams add a dimension to the installation. I always like when I get direct sunshine on them because it emphasizes the layering of the thread in very interesting ways.”

With two assistants, he constructed this installation in about a week. His greatest challenge was working to the confines of the space. “Because of the historic nature of the building, I wasn’t able to touch ceiling, walls or floors to screw in my structures,” he says. “So I resorted to fixing them to the railings, which in great measure restricted what I was able to do. In the end, it worked out pretty well; it really exceeded my expectations how well the installation inhabits the space.”

On the one hand internet giants like Google are coming under criticism for unsolicitedly collecting any information accessible; on the other hand it is surprising how many intimacies we reveal voluntarily, especially in social networks like Facebook.

An unimaginable flood of images with self-projection as its only purpose.”
